At Ysgol Bro Taf, we offer tailored learning pathways to support all pupils. Our Alternative Curriculum provides a flexible approach, focusing on vocational qualifications and practical skills for pupils who need a different learning route. The Alternative Curriculum+ offers additional targeted support for those requiring more intensive interventions. For pupils with Social, Emotional, and Behavioural Difficulties (SEBD), we provide specialised programmes that focus on building emotional resilience, improving social skills, and developing positive behaviour strategies. These programmes ensure that every pupil has the opportunity to succeed academically and personally, regardless of their individual challenges.
The Alternative Curriculum at Ysgol Bro Taf is a different approach to the curriculum which is designed to meet the needs of pupils who struggle with the standard academic settings. It allows for a more personalised learning experience, accommodating different learning styles and paces. The aim is to provide meaningful educational experiences for pupils who may not thrive in traditional settings, helping them reach their full potential.
The curriculum focuses on social emotional learning as well as academic achievement where pupils engage in hands-on activities, projects and real-world applications for knowledge. The curriculum is tailored to the interests and strengths of the pupils, encouraging them to take an active role in their education. The Alternative Curriculum blends subjects together, allowing for learning that connects different areas of knowledge in a supportive and inclusive environment which helps pupils build confidence and resilience. Pupils within the Alternative Curriculum complete qualifications in Mathematics, English and Science, as well as Vocational.
The Social, Emotional, Behavioural Difficulties class based at Ysgol Bro Taf, is a Local Authority class. Pupils are placed within this class following a robust graduated response and agreement from the Local Authority Additional Learning Needs panel. All pupils within the class have an additional learning need and a Local Authority Individual Development Plan (LA IDP).
The SEBD class is designed for pupils who face challenges in their social, emotional, or behavioural development. The class provides specialised support to help pupils manage their emotions, improve their social skills, and develop positive behaviours.
Mr Alun Thomas is the teacher of the class and he is supported by two teaching assistants. All staff work closely with the pupils to create personalised learning plans that address specific needs of the pupils. The class consists of 12 pupils, allowing for more personalised attention and support. The curriculum often includes activities and lessons aimed at building social skills, conflict resolution and emotional regulation. Therapeutic strategies and mindfulness practices are incorporated into the day to help support pupils cope with their challenges. The SEBD class promotes a supportive and collaborative atmosphere where pupils can learn from each other and feel accepted within a nurturing environment.
Pupils within the class have opportunities to attend lessons and the school curriculum within the mainstream setting of Ysgol Bro Taf.
